MAHARASTRA,AUG 31 :  A video of an elderly man being assaulted by passengers on a train in Maharashtra’s Nashik district on suspicion that he was carrying beef has gone viral on social media, inviting fierce criticism from the opposition. A video of the incident, which took place near Igatpuri on Dhule Express, was shared by AIMIM MP Imtiaz Jaleel, who called out the government and police for turning a bling eye against “these forces”.

The alleged incident took place earlier this week, the Government Railway Police (GRP) said on Saturday. Thane GRP has registered an FIR against more than five passengers.

The argument first started over the seat. The video shows several people surrounding the elderly man and threatening him. The group then goes on to assault the man even as he pleads before them. The elderly man is also heard saying that it was goat meat and not beef.

The GRP said the elderly man, Haji Ashraf Munyar, was a resident of Jalgaon district. He was travelling to his daughter’s house in Kalyan when he was allegedly beaten up by his co-passengers.

The GRP said the people involved in assaulting the man have been identified. However, no case has been registered yet.

“We have taken cognisance of the video and identified the victim. Some of the people involved in the attack have also been identified, and a probe is on,” an official said.

Reacting to the incident, AIMIM MP Imtiaz Jaleel said there was a need to stand and “counter these forces” as such incidents had become a normal trend.

“We just can’t be mute spectators. It’s high time we, all secular Indians, should come together to defeat these forces. How so much poison has spread among these men and how could they even think of doing such a thing to somebody who maybe their grandfathers’ age,” the Aurangabad MP tweeted.

“Enough of giving memorandums and expressing our anger on social media. If the government and police are turning a blind eye, then we as a community need to stand and counter these forces. It has become a normal trend now and we as Indians our doing nothing,” he further said.
