Odisha Bids Farewell to Cinema Icon Uttam Mohanty

Bhubaneswar, Feb. 28: The mortal remains of Odisha’s beloved film icon, Uttam Mohanty, were consigned to flames at the Satyanagar crematorium on Friday afternoon, marking the end of an era in Odia cinema. The veteran actor, aged 66, passed away on Thursday evening at Medanta Hospital in New Delhi, leaving fans and the film fraternity in deep sorrow.
Survived by his son Babushaan Mohanty, wife Aparajita Priyadarshini Mohanty, daughter-in-law, and grandson, Uttam Mohanty’s final journey was marked by state honours, a testament to his unparalleled contribution to Odia cinema. Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi paid his last respects, followed by a ceremonial guard of honour.
A trailblazer in Odia cinema, Uttam Mohanty is celebrated as the first superstar of Odisha. His illustrious career spanned over four decades, during which he appeared in more than 130 Odia films, several Bengali movies, and even left his mark in a Hindi film. His charming screen presence, powerful performances, and versatility earned him the love and admiration of audiences across regions.
Uttam Mohanty made his cinematic debut in 1977 with Sadhu Meher’s Abhiman. He went on to deliver iconic performances in films like Jajabara, Chilika Teerey, Danda Balunga, and Kie Jite Kie Haare. Recognized for his exceptional talent and dedication, he became the youngest recipient of the prestigious Jayadev Samman, Odisha’s highest cine award honoring veteran artists.
Condolences poured in from political leaders, fans, and film industry peers. Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi expressed his grief, stating, “Uttam Mohanty’s demise has left a void in Ollywood that is difficult to fill. My heartfelt condolences to his bereaved family.” Senior leaders, including BJP National Vice President Baijyant Panda and Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, also paid homage to the late actor.
Born on December 23, 1958, Uttam Mohanty discovered his passion for acting early in life. In 1987, he married his co-star Aparajita Priyadarshini, forming one of Ollywood’s most iconic on-screen and off-screen partnerships.
Remembered not only for his cinematic brilliance but also for his humility and gracious personality, Uttam Mohanty leaves behind an indelible legacy. His contribution to Odia cinema will continue to inspire future generations of artists and movie lovers.
