Odisha constitutes 8-member committee to hold talks with AP to address contentious issues

BHUBANESWAR, NOV. 25: As decided in a joint meeting between Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik and his Andhra Pradesh counterpart YS Jagan Mohan Reddy on November 9, the state has formed an eight-member committee comprising senior bureaucrats to discuss outstanding issues with the neighbouring state.
The committee is headed by the chief secretary Suresh Chandra Mohapatra. The other seven members of the committee include development commissioner-cum-additional chief secretary, additional chief secretary of home department, principal secretary of revenue and disaster management department, principal secretary of water resources department, principal secretary of energy department, principal secretary of schools and mass education department and principal secretary of higher education department.
The joint meeting was held to resolve bilateral outstanding issues and promote mutual cooperation between both the states,
The CM had decided that chief secretaries of both the states will set up an ‘institutional mechanism’ to deliberate on outstanding issues and find a solution that is in the best interest of the people of Odisha and Andhra Pradesh. Disputes on water resources, common boundary and energy, and left-wing extremism were discussed during the meeting.
During the discussion at the state secretariat here, both the CMs had also decided to work closely on resolving the issues relating to Kotia group of village and any other boundary dispute; Neradi Barrage issue, Jhanjavathi reservoir issue, Polavaram multi-purpose project issue, release of water for Bahuda river and) mutual no-objection certificates (NOCs) for the Balimela and Upper Sileru projects in energy sector.
Both the states also had resolved in the meeting to extend support towards tackling the problem of left-wing extremism and ganja cultivation.
The CMs had further decided that both the state would work towards setting up a chair for Odia and Telugu languages in BR Ambedkar University, Srikakulam and Berhampur University, respectively. Besides, appointment of language teachers in schools in border districts of the two states, supply of books and conduct of language examination would be taken up, it was then decided in the November 9 meeting.
