Bhubaneswar, Aug 11 : Adding another feather to its cap, Utkal Alumina International Limited (UAIL), a subsidiary of Hindalco Industries Limited, has bagged the IGMC (Indian Green Manufacturing Challenge) Award for its outstanding contribution to green manufacturing and in line with the efforts of leading Indian economy towards a sustainable one.

In the special virtual telecast of the IGMC award ceremony on CNBC TV18 recently, UAIL got a special mention for demonstrating its commitment to deploying state of the art technology, environment friendly operations through the LDC (Long Distance Conveyor), railway connectivity to the downstream plants, captive bauxite mines with sustainable mining practices and high efficiency captive co-gen power plant.

IGMC, which operates under the aegis of International Research Institute for Manufacturing, is an award platform that is designed to recognise manufacturing firms that have shown a consistent track record in improving sustainability criteria associated with a manufacturing facility.

Speaking on the occasion, Mazhar Beig, the Unit Head of UAIL, said: “At UAIL, sustainability goes beyond manufacturing to improve the lives of people around us. We operate with benchmark plant recoveries and are also one of the low-cost producers of Alumina in the world. With significant reduction in carbon footprint, we are one of the benchmark industries globally in terms of energy consumption.”

The Utkal Alumina fraternity deeply appreciates the IGMC for recognising the efforts of Utkal Alumina for investing heavily in reducing the land footprint of our solid waste, besides making large quantities of red mud and fly ash for use for the cement industry. Its goal of biodiversity in mining operations and developing community forest is well appreciated.
