Agorastos said around 250 passengers have been evacuated safely. Around 350 people were travelling on the train, reported Reuters, citing local media.

In a televised address, fire service spokesman Vassilis Varthakoyiannis said the evacuation process is underway. He added that the rescue efforts were hindered by the severity of the collision between the two trains.

Rescuers wore head lamps to see through the thick smoke and pulled out pieces of mangled sheet metal from the crashed rail cars to search for people trapped under the debris.
