NEW DELHI,JUNE 28: The Arvind Kejriwal-led Aam Aadmi Party today gave its “in-principle” support to the Uniform Civil Code a day after Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s strong push for the proposal drew criticism from several opposition parties.

“The Aam Aadmi Party supports the ideological stance of the UCC. Article 44 also states that there should be a Uniform Civil Code. However, the Aam Aadmi Party believes that consensus should be reached after discussions with all religions and political parties before implementing it,” AAP leader Sandeep Pathak told India Today.

The AAP leader, though, was quick to slam the BJP, saying the Prime Minister’s pitch for the Uniform Civil Code was in line with the party’s habit of raising “complicated and complex issues” ahead of elections. Five states are set to vote later this year ahead of the crucial general election next year.

“The BJP has no interest in implementing the UCC or resolving this issue. The BJP only creates a state of confusion so that divisions can be created in the country, and then elections can be fought,” AAP’s Sandeep Pathak said.

“If Prime Minister Narendra Modi had done some work in the past nine years, he would have had the support of work. Since the Prime Minister doesn’t have the support of work, he will seek the support of the UCC,” he added.

The AAP’s support for the politically-sensitive issue comes amid the opposition’s campaign to forge a united front to take on the BJP in 2024. Several parties, including the Congress, DMK and the Asaduddin Owaisi-led AIMIM had accused the Prime Minister of “divisive politics” after his remarks on the Uniform Civil Code.

Cracks in opposition unity surfaced last week after the Aam Aadmi Party slammed the Congress over its “silence” on the Delhi ordinance issue at the opposition unity meet in Patna last week. The ordinance overrides the Supreme Court order allowing the Delhi government control over transfers and appointments of bureaucrats.

The AAP even made it clear at the meeting that its participation in any future meetings was contingent upon the Congress pledging its support to its fight against the ordinance.

“It is high time that the Congress decides whether it stands with the people of Delhi or with the Modi government,” the AAP had said in a statement.

Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge had said that a decision on the ordinance would be taken “before Parliament begins”. I don’t know why there is so much publicity about it outside,’ Kharge had said.
