Bhubaneswar, Sept. 17: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday launched Odisha’s government’s much hyped Subhadra Yatra, marking his 74th birthday, at a special function held here at Janata Maidan.

Over a lakh people, most of them women, joined the grand event.

Odisha governor Raghubar Das, two deputy chief ministers — Kanak Vardhan Singhdeo and Pravati Parida; Union ministers Jual Oram and Dharmendra Pradhan, all BJP MPs and MLAs and many other dignitaries were present at the launching ceremony.

As many as 25 lakh women received Rs 5,000 in their bank accounts as Modi formally inaugurated the scheme. Each eligible beneficiary will get Rs 50,000 in five years in 10 equal installments.

“We had made the promise before the elections and we fulfilled it today. This will surely bring socio-economic empowerment to our mothers and sisters. They can spend the money as per their own wish and requirements,” Modi said.

On the occasion, the PM also laid the foundation for multiple new railway and national highway projects in the state. “These initiatives and projects will greatly accelerate Odisha’s progress,” he said.

Odisha chief minister Mohan Charan Majhi said, “On his birthday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited Odisha. Our party BJP had promised to roll out Subhadra Yojana before coming to power. Today, PM Modi visited the state for the launch of the mega scheme and we have fulfilled our promise. It is a mega welfare scheme and there is excitement among the beneficiaries.”

Odisha Deputy CM Pravati Parida said, “Subhadra Yojana is PM Modi’s guarantee and BJP’s commitment. We have set a target to extend the scheme to one crore beneficiaries and 72 lakh beneficiaries have already completed the registration process.”

She added that over a crore women will be benefitted by Subhadra Yojana.
