Mumbai, Oct. 28: Tata Power, one of India’s largest integrated power companies, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL) to develop 110 kV power infrastructure for the latter’s landmark Petro Resid Fluidized Catalytic Cracking Unit (PRFCCU) project at its Mumbai Refinery. The proposed infrastructure will cater to the project’s power requirement of 90 MW.
The PRFCCU project marks a significant milestone in India’s refining industry, being the first of its kind to be executed in the country. The strategic initiative is aimed at enhancing the recovery of higher-value petroleum products and accelerating petrochemical diversification.
With a processing capacity of 3 million metric tonnes per annum (MMTPA) and an estimated investment of Rs14,203 crore, the project is BPCL’s second-largest undertaking currently under execution and the largest-ever project at its Mumbai Refinery. It is expected to strengthen domestic value addition, support India’s energy security and contribute to the national vision of Aatmanirbhar Bharat.
Under the MoU, Tata Power will provide 110 kV connectivity and undertake the design and development of the associated power infrastructure required to meet the refinery project’s electricity needs. The proposed infrastructure development involves a combined estimated investment of approximately Rs250 crore by Tata Power and BPCL, subject to applicable approvals and the achievement of project milestones. The work is envisaged to be completed over approximately 24 months.
Beyond meeting the immediate power requirements of BPCL’s PRFCCU project, the initiative is expected to strengthen Tata Power’s transmission network in the Trombay area. The enhanced infrastructure will help accommodate anticipated growth in electricity demand from large industrial consumers and other high-load developments in this strategically important industrial zone.
As part of its long-term strategy to build a robust, reliable and future-ready power network for Mumbai, Tata Power also plans to strengthen its transmission infrastructure in Trombay through the development of a 400 kV transmission facility over the next five years.
The planned augmentation is expected to enhance power evacuation capabilities and improve grid availability, supporting the growing requirements of Mumbai’s industrial and commercial ecosystem.
The collaboration underscores the strategic importance of reliable power infrastructure in supporting large-scale industrial projects and strengthening the energy supply chain. By combining BPCL’s refining expansion with Tata Power’s transmission and distribution capabilities, the initiative is expected to contribute to the development of Mumbai’s industrial energy infrastructure.
Through the partnership, both companies have reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening Mumbai’s energy ecosystem and enhancing energy security. The initiative also reflects Tata Power’s continued focus on investing in transmission and distribution infrastructure to support long-term industrial growth, improve grid resilience and advance India’s energy self-reliance.
