Successful operation highlights growing surgical capabilities of district hospital

Malkangiri, Nov. 4: In a significant medical achievement, doctors at the District Headquarters Hospital (DHH) in Malkangiri have successfully removed a massive tumour weighing approximately 5 kg from a woman’s abdomen in a rare and complex surgical procedure.

According to reports, Sumitra Giri, a resident of Bypariguda in Koraput district, had been suffering from persistent abdominal pain for the past several months. Following a medical examination at Malkangiri DHH, doctors detected a tumour in her abdomen.

As her condition required surgical intervention, Dr Swapan Kumar Dinda of Malkangiri DHH advised her to undergo surgery. Taking up the challenging case, Dr Dinda performed the complicated operation, successfully removing the tumour weighing around 5 kg after considerable effort.

Dr Dinda said the patient was now in a stable and healthy condition following the surgery.

The achievement has drawn attention as another example of the expanding healthcare capabilities of district-level government hospitals. A few days ago, a similar case made headlines in Chhattisgarh’s Kanker district, where doctors removed a massive tumour weighing nearly 20 kg from the abdomen of a 17-year-old girl.

The successful operation at Malkangiri DHH has generated appreciation among local residents, who have lauded Dr Dinda for his surgical expertise, dedication and commitment to patient care.

The surgery is being viewed as a notable milestone for healthcare services in the tribal-dominated district, where access to advanced medical facilities remains a major concern.
