Morigaon/Assam, Nov 5  : A series of criminal incidents reported in Morigaon district over the past few months has raised concerns over law and order and the effectiveness of crime control. Cases involving cyber fraud, banking scams, theft, alleged drug trafficking, cattle smuggling and murder have posed multiple challenges before the police. However, police raids, arrests and the recovery of stolen property indicate that action against criminal activities is continuing.

Cybercrime Emerges as a Major Challenge

The areas of Lahorighat, Moirabari and Bhuragaon in Morigaon district have previously been in the news over incidents related to cybercrime. According to a report published in January this year, police had arrested more than 300 alleged cybercriminals in the district over the past three years and recovered and returned Rs 1.20 crore to victims.

Cases of obtaining loans from banks and financial institutions using forged documents have also come to light. In one such case registered at Moirabari Police Station on January 4, three persons were reportedly arrested. These incidents highlight the need for better coordination among local police, financial institutions and agencies dealing with digital identity to effectively combat cybercrime.

From School Thefts to Organised Gangs

In June 2026, Morigaon Police arrested a suspect and recovered a large quantity of allegedly stolen goods while investigating a series of thefts at government schools. According to police, thefts had been reported from at least five government schools in the district.

The recovered items included computers, CPUs, televisions, sound systems, LPG cylinders, inverters, batteries and other equipment. Police were also searching for other suspects in connection with the cases.

The incident underlines the need to strengthen security arrangements at educational institutions and keep a close watch on the purchase and sale of stolen goods.

Crackdown on Narcotics

Police have also taken action against alleged drug trafficking in the district. In June 2026, Morigaon Sadar Police arrested a suspect in the Kalyanpur area and recovered 45 containers suspected to contain heroin.

Subsequently, in August, three suspects were arrested during another operation in the No. 1 Solmari area. Police reportedly recovered approximately 24.93 grams of suspected heroin packed in 16 plastic containers, along with mobile phones and a syringe.

Establishing the actual nature of the seized substance and identifying the involvement of other persons allegedly linked to the network remain important aspects of the investigation.

Cattle Smuggling and Serious Criminal Incidents

According to a report published on October 31, Dharamtul Police arrested two persons and seized 20 cattle and two vehicles in connection with an alleged cattle-smuggling operation. Police suspected that the accused were involved in trafficking cattle from Assam through Meghalaya to Bangladesh. However, the allegations will be established only through the judicial process.

Meanwhile, two serious murder cases were also reported in the district in October. On October 22, police detained three suspects in connection with the alleged murder of Minu Boro at Baghautha village.

In another incident, the burnt remains of 25-year-old Jahir Islam, who had been reported missing, were recovered in the Mayong area on October 26. A woman was subsequently reported to have been taken into custody in connection with the case.

The circumstances surrounding the crimes, their motives and the roles of the alleged accused will depend on the findings of the ongoing investigations.

Effective Surveillance and Public Cooperation Essential

The incidents reported in Morigaon indicate that the nature of crime is no longer confined to conventional theft and physical assaults. Tackling financial fraud through digital platforms, suspected trafficking networks and serious violent crimes requires the police to strengthen technological investigation, intelligence gathering and inter-district coordination.

At the same time, public awareness is equally important. Citizens need to be encouraged to report suspicious financial transactions, the use of forged documents and information relating to criminal activities to the police without delay.

A coordinated approach involving the police, financial institutions and the public is essential to curb organised crime and maintain law and order in Morigaon district.
