Nursing Students Sensitized to Palliative and End-of-Life Care at Awareness Programme

Bhubaneswar : An awareness programme on Palliative Care and End-of-Life Care was organised at Viswass School and College of Nursing and Paramedical College on July 17, aiming to educate future healthcare professionals on the importance of compassionate care for patients with life-limiting illnesses.
The session was conducted by Dr. V. Jagannath, Medical Officer, and Mr. Swaroop Kumar Baral, Nursing Lead, from the Bagchi Karunashraya Palliative Care Centre. The speakers highlighted the significance of hospice and palliative care in improving the quality of life of patients facing serious illnesses and stressed the need to provide dignity, comfort, and emotional support during the final stages of life.
Addressing the students, the resource persons explained the holistic approach of palliative care, which focuses not only on pain management but also on addressing the psychological, social, and spiritual needs of patients and their families. They encouraged the aspiring nurses and paramedical professionals to develop empathy and communication skills as essential components of quality healthcare.
The programme was coordinated by Mr. Saroj Ghadei, Public Relations Manager, who invited the students to visit the Bagchi Karunashraya Palliative Care Centre for practical exposure and firsthand experience of palliative care services. The visit, he said, would help students better understand the principles and practices of patient-centred, compassionate care.
The interactive session witnessed enthusiastic participation from students and faculty members, who appreciated the initiative for creating awareness about the growing importance of palliative and end-of-life care in modern healthcare.
