TPNODL prioritizes public safety
By Sudam Patra
Baleswar, April 2 : TP Northern Odisha Distribution Limited (TPNODL), a joint venture between Tata Power and the Government of Odisha, continues to reinforce its commitment to operational safety and community well-being. In a major safety drive, the company has successfully relocated electrical transformers from over 1,700 schools and Anganwadi center premises across its operation area.
Recognizing that children’s safety is a paramount concern, TPNODL has proactively shifted these assets to external locations and constructed robust fencing to eliminate potential hazards within educational environments. This initiative ensures that high-voltage equipment is situated away from student activity areas, significantly reducing electrical accident risk in learning environments.
The project has seen extensive implementation across five districts to ensure comprehensive coverage. In Balasore alone, TPNODL has shifted transformers from 567 educational sites, while 356 institutions in Jajpur have been cleared of similar hazards. The safety drive has also successfully addressed approximately 350 institutions in Keonjhar, 217 in Bhadrak, and more than 250 in Mayurbhanj. Beyond mere relocation, the company has reinforced these new installations with the construction of dedicated fencing and protective barriers to provide an additional layer of safety for the surrounding community.
In tandem with its relocation efforts, TPNODL is aggressively pursuing a region-wide fencing campaign for existing transformers located in public spaces. To date, specialized fences have been installed at 781 transformer sites in Balasore, 586 in Baripada, 476 in Jajpur, nearly 400 in Bhadrak, and over 300 in Keonjhar. These measures are designed to prevent accidental contact and ensure that electrical infrastructure remains isolated and secure.
To complement these structural upgrades, TPNODL urges the general public to maintain a strict safety distance from all electrical installations. Parents and guardians are advised to ensure that children do not play near security fences, while citizens are reminded not to tie livestock to electrical poles or transformer fencing. As community cooperation is vital to maintaining a hazard-free electricity environment, residents are encouraged to immediately report any unsafe conditions, such as damaged transformers or snapped wires, by contacting the 24/7 helplines at 1800-345-6718 or 1912.
