VILLAGERS ATTACKED COPS DURING GANJA PLANT CUTTING
On Saturday , villagers in Parajaguda under Orkel PS ,Malkangiri clashed with police while the cops were trying to cut down a patch of cannabis trees. The incident resulted in three police officers being injured.
According to eyewitness accounts, the confrontation began when a team of police arrived in the village to destroy a plantation of cannabis trees that had been reported to the authorities. As the officers began to cut down the plants, a group of villagers confronted them and tried to stop them from continuing.
The situation quickly escalated, and the villagers in huge numbers began attacking the police . The police, who were in less number were forced to retreat and called for backup.The villagers cought off one Home Guard and detained till evening.
When additional officers SDPO Alexius Kispotta,IIC Orkel John Kujur and IIC Chitrakonda Anil Kumar Porida with team arrived on the scene, they were able to restore order and rescued the Home Guard. The three injured police officers were treated at nearby hospital Orkel CHC and are expected to make a full recovery.
The incident has sparked outrage among local residents, who have criticized the police for their heavy-handed approach to the cannabis issue. Many villagers argue that the cannabis plants are an important source of income for their families and that the authorities should have sought a more peaceful resolution to the matter.
The police, however, maintain that they were acting in accordance with the law and that the cultivation of cannabis is illegal. They have vowed to continue their efforts to stamp out drug production in the area.
