Vintage car gets new identity with new VA series number plate
On January 2, the Odisha government had taken a decision to allow classic or vintage vehicle owners to apply for special number plates.

Puri. 7: A vintage car in Odisha has got a new identity after its present owner who inherited the vehicle from her grandfather succeeded in registering with the state road transport authorities. Padmalaya Praharaj, a resident of Puri, was worried about how to preserve her grandfather’s memory.
Then the decision of the Odisha government on how to re-register a vintage road-worthy vehicle came as a huge relief.
On January 2, the Odisha government had taken a decision to allow classic or vintage vehicle owners to apply for special number plates and get an exemption from scrapping. The decision was taken in accordance with the CMV Rule, 1989 for the registration of Vintage Motor Vehicles by the Union ministry of road transport and highways (MoRTH).
Praharaj seized the occasion and immediately applied for registration of her grandfather’s vintage car. On Tuesday, her car’s new registration number was allotted to her.
Praharaj’s car’s old registration number was ORP-2456. The new registration number allotted to it is OD VAAA 0001. She had deposited Rs 20,000 to get her vehicle registered anew.
“There is a provision of the Government of India to get your old car of above 50 years road-worthy by registration as a vintage car. So we contacted the Road Transport Office (RTO) and checked the rules. Then it took around one or a half a month to make it worthy of the road,” said Ashirvad Praharaj, husband of Padmalaya Praharaj.
The ‘VA’ series is dedicated to vintage vehicles. And the new certificate is valid for a period of 10 years. The subsequent renewals will cost the owner an additional Rs 5,000 and it shall be for a period of five years.
