AM/NS India steel powers Indian Navy’s newly commissioned INS Malvan

Mumbai/Bhubaneswar, Aug 5 : ArcelorMittal Nippon Steel India (AM/NS India) supplied 100% of the specialised steel required to build INS Malvan, the Indian Navy’s latest indigenously built Anti-Submarine Warfare Shallow Watercraft (ASW-SWC), commissioned on 22 July 2026 at Karwar, Karnataka.
Manufactured at AM/NS India’s integrated steelmaking facility in Hazira, the specialised steel used in the vessel highlights the role of advanced Indian steelmaking in supporting the country’s growing defence manufacturing ecosystem and maritime security. The milestone further strengthens AM/NS India’s contribution to India’s self-reliance journey by supplying critical materials for strategically important national programmes.

Built by Cochin Shipyard Limited, INS Malvan is the second of eight Mahe-class ASW-SWCs and the second vessel of its class to enter service with the Indian Navy. Built with more than 80% indigenous content, the programme supports the Government of India’s Aatmanirbhar Bharat and Viksit Bharat initiatives while showcasing the country’s growing capabilities in naval design, engineering, systems integration and defence shipbuilding.
Designed for underwater surveillance, anti-submarine warfare, mine warfare and coastal security operations, INS Malvan will strengthen the Indian Navy’s ability to safeguard India’s maritime interests and operate effectively in coastal waters.
AM/NS India is supplying all of the specialised steel required for the fleet of eight ASW-SWCs being built for the Indian Navy. Beyond this programme, the company has supplied specialised steel for key naval platforms including INS Visakhapatnam and INS Surat.
The company has also contributed to several landmark national infrastructure projects, including the Chenab Railway Bridge, Anji Khad Railway Bridge, Bogibeel Bridge and the India-based Neutrino Observatory.Together, these projects underscore the critical role of advanced Indian steelmaking in strengthening national security, supporting self-reliance and enabling strategic infrastructure development.
